Tips and Resources to Save You Money This Winter

Hydro, heating, gas, holidays. gifts, large dinners....all costs we are about to see rise on us. If you are losing sleep at night over it, you are not the only one!

Even though daily costs and household bills are on the rise, there are numerous creative ways to save yourself some extra money and keep costs down.

Hydro is the topic of conversation for many becasue rates just rise and rise making it painful to even look at the bills! Knowing the peak times for hydro costs and when you should be using things like the dishwasher, laundry machines and cooking a 6 hour long roast can really help you keep costs down.

Keeping the thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter when you are not home can add up in some nice savings.Evenings after 7 and weekends is the best time to do the mountain of laundry you have been ignoring. The dryer is a power sucker!

Ontario Hydro Time of Use Chart can really help you know what times are peak and what times you should be doing your household chores without breaking the bank. Each province has their own guidelines and rates.

Winter Heating Savings Tip

  • Unplug appliances and small items you aren't using at that moment.
  • Turn down the heat a few degrees when leaving the house
  • Weather Strip all doors and windows. ( You will be amazed how a little effort can cut your costs)
  • Set ceiling fans to clock wise
  • Use energy efficient decorations during the holidays
  • Use a Slow Cooker to have family meals ready by after work, rather than running the over at full blast in the early evening.
  • Turn the freaking lights OFF when you leave a room! It seriously takes 2 seconds to save you a $1 at least.
  • Keep the curtains closed or windows shaded in the evening and on sunny days let the heat beam in. Heat loss from windows is approximately 25 percent of your heating bill
  • Replace furnace filter
  • Close off un-used rooms
  • Only preheat your oven when baking and turn it off early to make use of lingering heat
  • Take shorter showers
  • Put computers and laptops in sleep mode when no in use.
